Jose Cruz Pena

Founder and writer behind Signalpost — practical operations guidance for small businesses, written without vendor spin.

Who I am

I am Jose Cruz Pena, a software developer and small business operator. For more than a decade I have built and maintained operational tools for other companies, including financial and compliance software used by cooperatives and fintech organizations. I also run the messy day-to-day side of small operations myself: tools, handoffs, invoices, access, vendors, and the habits that keep work moving when nobody has a full-time ops title.

Signalpost is my independent publication. I write under my own name because readers deserve to know who stands behind the advice — and because I am accountable for corrections when something is wrong or outdated.

Why Signalpost exists

Most advice about business software is written by the companies selling it. Every guide here starts from a real operational problem — too many tools, unclear invoicing, communication breaking down on a remote team — and works backward to what actually solves it. Sometimes that is software. Often it is a smaller habit, a clearer list, or a rule the team can keep on a bad week.

That background shapes the editorial line: skepticism toward tools that promise to fix a process problem, and a preference for the smallest system that actually solves the job. Articles are researched against live product constraints and real operating habits — not assembled as a content farm or an affiliate mill.

What you'll find here

Long-form guides on project and task management, automation, business software selection, remote team communication, and the operational and financial admin side of running a small business — invoicing, expenses, vendors, payments, backups, and access control. Each piece is written to be read once and used.

How the site is funded

Signalpost may display advertising through Google AdSense so the publication can stay free to read. Ads are a funding mechanism, not an editorial input: they do not decide which tools I recommend or which problems I cover. Details on cookies and advertising choices are in the Privacy Policy.

What this site is not

Signalpost is not a deal site, a scraping feed, or a review farm. I do not publish adult, violent, misleading, or copyrighted content I do not have rights to use. I do not run click-exchange programs or pay for traffic that exists only to generate ad clicks.
